COVID-19: Namibia records 495 cases and 45 deaths

Health and Social Minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Wednesday recorded 495 new COVID-19 cases and 45 deaths, bringing the country’s death toll to 2 665 .

Shangula, in the daily COVID-19 update on Thursday, said the newly confirmed cases are from 1 833 tested samples and had a gender distribution of 255 females and 240 males ranging between the ages of two months and 91 years.

Khomas region recorded the highest number of new cases at 127 followed by Zambezi with 84, ||Kharas 58, Otjozondjupa 53, Kunene 50, Erongo 46, Oshikoto 28, Oshana 24, Omusati 16, Kavango East five, Hardap three and Omaheke one.

Among the confirmed cases are 42 learners, four teachers and six students from different institutions. The ministry also reported seven cases among health care workers, and of all the confirmed cases, nine are reported to have received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and none of them is fully vaccinated.

A total of 289 new recoveries were also recorded on Wednesday, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 90 448 while active cases are standing at 21 236 of which 547 people were hospitalised with 11 patients in intensive care units.

A cumulative number of 140 950 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Wednesday, while 39 851 had received their second dose.
