COVID-19: Namibia records 71 new cases and four deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Monday recorded 71 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 924.

In the daily update issued Tuesday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 1 065 results and represented a 6.7 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 48 females and 23 males aged between three weeks and 86 years.

The Zambezi Region recorded the highest number of cases at 19, followed by the Khomas Region with 11 cases, Erongo with 10 cases, Omusati six and Otjozondjupa with five cases. The ||Kharas, Oshikoto, Omaheke and Kavango West regions recorded three cases each, while Kunene and Kavango East recorded two cases each.

Among the confirmed cases are 29 learners, one teacher and two healthcare workers.

Eight cases are fully vaccinated, while 60 cases or 84.5 per cent of the new cases, are not vaccinated.

Shangula further reported that 65 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 144 968.

The number of active cases on Monday stood at 8 508, of which 218 were hospitalised and 23 admitted to intensive care units (ICU). Two of the hospitalised cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 20 are fully vaccinated. Of the 23 cases in the ICU, two are fully vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 23 January 2022, 414 751 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 111 595 had received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, 3 253 of which were children aged between 12 and 17 years. Meanwhile, 243 351 people have received two doses, resulting in 354 946 people having completed their vaccination, which translates to 24.1 per cent of the target population. Additionally, 13 756 people have received booster doses.
