Election preparations going well: Mujoro

Chief electoral officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Theo Mujoro said the preparation to the upcoming presidential and National Assembly elections are going well with only a few matters pending.

While giving ECN's readiness status on the upcoming elections here on Wednesday, Mujoro said ECN is done with training the regional coordinators and currently training Retuning officers.

He added that the ECN is almost done with the recruitment of polling officials and presiding officers of which 13 638 polling officials and 2273 presiding officers are to be recruited.

There is no new advertisement, we received more than 53 000 applications during January 2019 and additional staffs are to be recruited from that pool, Mujoro said, adding that the ECN intends to recruit unemployed Namibians with relevant qualifications and experience.

Mujoro said ECN displayed the provisional voters' register at 280 venues across the country and there was no objection adding that the ECN is currently removing duplicates and deceased people's names and the final voters' register which is expected to be published in the government gazette on 31 October.

He added that ECN is currently busy with voters' education in all fourteen regions via different platforms such as radio, ECN website, ECN social media platforms and through the ECN youth election ambassadors.

About the transport, he said ECN is engaging the government to avail vehicles and the shortfall will be met by sourcing private cars.

We are currently preparing to commence with the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) first level exercise to be followed by the printing of the EVM ballot papers as well as the EVM setting process, he said.

Mujoro said they are continuing verifying names of people in the parties' parliamentary list and following that some members have resigned from their position to be on their parties' parliamentary list, Mujoro said on 15 January 2020 there will be by-elections in constituencies such as, Oshikuku, Khomasdal, Keetmanshoop urban, Walvis Bay urban and Gobabis and the supplementary voters' registration on these constituencies will be from the 1-2 November.
