ABUJA: The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has revealed that the ministry is actively addressing concerns about environmental degradation by ensuring that mining companies adhere to stipulated standards. Alake made this announcement at the conclusion of the ninth Nigeria Mining Week held on Wednesday in Abuja. He emphasized the role of various departments within the ministry that are tasked with overseeing the operations of mining operators to ensure compliance with environmental standards and regulations.According to News Agency of Nigeria, Alake highlighted that this initiative is part of efforts to tackle issues such as subnational interference, overregulation of the sector, and multiple taxes imposed by state governments. He noted that these challenges were discussed at the chief executives roundtable, underscoring the need for engagement with sub-national authorities, including local governments, which often claim ownership of the land and enter into disputes with operators. Ala ke also encouraged state governments to apply for mining licenses to foster a sense of belonging and participation in the sector.The minister further disclosed that findings indicate sub-nationals are aggrieved about possessing mineral resources without having access to them. This situation has led to tensions, which the ministry aims to alleviate by addressing reported infractions by mining companies. Alake urged stakeholders to introduce innovative solutions to tackle challenges in the sector, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to develop the mining industry.In discussions with chief executive officers of mining companies, Alake recounted a suggestion for the government to establish a solid minerals bank. He proposed that operators consider forming their own financial institution, which could avoid political influence and ensure a sustainable structure. Alake expressed optimism that Mining Week fostered intellectual engagements and provided a platform for exploring opportunities to advance the s ector. The theme for the mining week was 'From the Inside Out: Building the Mining Sector to be the Cornerstone of the Economy.'
