First division newcomers upset Ramblers

WINDHOEK: Southern Streams First Division (SSFD) newcomers Khomas Nampol Football Club on Saturday here trashed Ramblers FC 4-0 in its first game of the season.

The SSFD kicked off on Saturday in different town around the country. Only one game was scheduled in the Windhoek at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Nampol who were just promoted to the SSFD, from the Khomas Second Division last season shocked Ramblers when they took an early lead in the 10th minute of the game through Silas Ashipala.

Ramblers who survived relegation to the second division last season by the skin of their teeth after ending ninth out of a 12 teams league in the 2014/15 first division season, tried all they could but their strikers failed to find the back of the net.

The half-time score was 1-0.

In the second half United came out the more stronger side dominating play throughout, but brilliant play from Nampol caught their defenders napping on the counter attacks which allow Ashipala to score his second goal of the game in the 48th minute.

The unstoppable Ashipala scored his third goal of the game in the 75th minute after he beat the defender on a one on one. United goalkeeper Mabakeng Mukela had no chance of stopping the on fire striker.

Ashipala scored his last goal of the game in the 92nd minute to give his side its first ever win in the first division.

Speaking to Nampa after the game Nampol coach Fortune Eichab said he was happy his side won their first game of the season but they still have a lot of work ahead of them.

“This season our main aim is to survive relegation. Winning today is good motivation for the boys and we are hoping we can still do the same tomorrow when we play Windhoek United here.

“We did not expect to win with such a margin, but it is important that we collect maximum points on all our home games,” said Eichab.

Ramblers coach Benedictus Haoseb told this agency that his team lost the game before it even started.

“We underestimated Khomas Nampol before the game started. Our players thought it was a walk in the park and this now makes it very difficult for us, as we have to travel to Gobabis on Sunday for our second game of the season.

“Our aim is to end the first half of the season on a high like position three, but if we start losing like this it will be very difficult,” stated Haoseb.
