Gay man allegedly killed at Gobabis: police

WINDHOEK; The Namibian Police at Gobabis in the Omaheke region are investigating a case of murder following the death of an allegedly ‘gay’ man there on Saturday.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s spokesperson, Sergeant Slogan Matheus told a media briefing here on Sunday afternoon that the deceased person was identified as Johannes Goagoseb, 35, who is believed to have been a gay resident of the town.

It is alleged that the suspected killer, also 35, found his girlfriend with the deceased at a house in Damara Block, Freedom Square in the Epako township on Saturday evening around 19h00 after earlier attending a memorial service.

The suspect allegedly asked his girlfriend what she was doing with a ‘moffie’, after which he beat her with clenched fists before he took a knife and chased her away up to her sister’s house.

The suspect then came back and started beating the ‘gay’ man with a building spirit-level (waterpas) all over the body, after which the victim allegedly collapsed.

The victim was taken to the Gobabis State Hospital for medical attention, but succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the assault.

The suspect has been arrested, and will make a first appearance in the Gobabis Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Investigations continue to establish the exact circumstances of the whole matter.
