GPT TransNamib Concrete Sleepers on Thursday donated personal protective equipment (PPE) worth N.dollars 75 000 to the Ministry of Health and Social Services to assist in COVID-19 mitigation efforts.

The donation, consisting of disposable and non-disposable masks and surgical grade disposable gloves to be used for the infection prevention control measures, was organised through the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) COVID-19 initiative.

The initiative has to date collected COVID-19 medical equipment and supplies worth over N.dollars 30 million, which has been donated to the Health Ministry.

Speaking at the handover, GPT TransNamib chairperson Mbingee Hindjou said while the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the company’s operations, it chose to do its part in assisting government in fighting the pandemic and helping the country return to normalcy.

“We hope this small donation makes a difference in the fight against the pandemic,” Hindjou said.

Receiving the donation, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Esther Muinjangue said the COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented crisis and its social impact could possibly be worse than the financial crisis.

“The pandemic requires solidarity and coordinated response from not only government, but also private sector businesses who might have the capacity, expertise and resources to control and mitigate the impact of the public health crisis on society. This pandemic sheds light on a new meaning and purpose for corporate social responsibility,” Muinjangue said.

The deputy minister also thanked the NCCI leadership for the continuous coordination of donations to assist national COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
