Implementation of BIG will help eradicate poverty in Namibia: Mandela Kapere

WINDHOEK: The implementation of the Basic Income Grant (BIG) will help to eradicate poverty in Namibia.

This was said by chairperson of the National Youth Council (NYC), Mandela Kapere at the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) at UN House in Windhoek yesterday.

The event took place under the theme ‘Youth, Development and Poverty’.

Kapere said the NYC, Council of Churches Namibia, the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) and a number of other institutions are members of the Basic Income Grant Collision of Namibia.

The purpose of the BIG Collision of Namibia is to engage Government and the broader society to adopt a universal income for all Namibians so as to eliminate the impact of poverty in the country

He said there are many Namibians who still live under the poverty line and drastic measures need to be taken to lift more Namibians out of absolute poverty.

Speaking at the same event, the Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, Zephania Kameeta shared Kapere’s sentiments, saying a BIG will help eradicate poverty in Namibia.

The minister said there are young people in Namibia who are trying to lift themselves out of poverty and the BIG would assist them.
