IPC withdraws councillor from CoW local authority

Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) has withdrawn its local authority councillor for the City of Windhoek (CoW) Desiree Davids, saying she does not have the party’s interest and that of the electorate at heart.

This is contained in a letter availed here Thursday, and addressed to Davids and all IPC members by the party’s National General Secretary Christine Aochamus while providing an update on the disciplinary hearing of Davids.

Davids has been suspended since June 2021 while the party conducted an investigation into a land application she allegedly wanted to be processed within a short period of time by the city.

Aochamus said the party received evidence of a letter addressed to the CoW acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) George Mayumbelo, in which Davids requested the speedy processing of her application for land by the council management committee within four days.

After the investigations, the appointed disciplinary committee afforded Davids a “fair” chance to state her side of the story, after which it found her guilty on three charges of breaching the oath of the party’s membership, oath of public office bearers and article 2.4 of the party’s constitution, as well as the code of conduct of local authority councillors.

‘The disciplinary committee on the strength of the evidence presented, recommended that Davids is not fit to represent the IPC at any forum and she does not have the party’s interest and that of the electorate that empowered the party, at heart,’ said Aochamus.

She added that apart from withdrawing Davids from the city council, the disciplinary committee has also recommended that Davids be dismissed from being sworn in as a member of the National Council of Patriots given that she demonstrated a lack of adherence to the provisions of IPC oath of membership and confidentiality because her presence in the IPC supreme organ will compromise the party’s stated political goals of fighting corruption.

When approached for comments, Davids confirmed receiving the letter and said she has resigned from the party.
