Iraq Faces Surge in Drone Attacks on Foreign-Operated Oil Fields

Erbil: An explosive-laden drone crashed near Erbil, the capital city of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq, as the country has been experiencing frequent drone attacks recently. The incident occurred at 1:27 a.m. local time on Thursday in the Bahirka area near Erbil city, without causing any casualties, according to a statement by the regional Directorate General of Counter Terrorism.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the past few days have seen an increasing number of drone attacks targeting oil fields operated by foreign companies in Iraq. On Wednesday morning, two drones struck an oil field managed by the Norwegian DNO oil company in the Faysh Khabur area, while a third drone hit another DNO-operated oil field in the Tawke area. Additionally, a fourth drone targeted an oil field run by a U.S. oil company in the Baadre area.

Further incidents occurred on Wednesday evening when a drone hit an oil field operated by a U.S. firm in the Baadre area for the second time. The attacks have continued throughout the week, with a drone hitting the Sarsang oil field in Duhok province on Tuesday morning, causing no casualties.

Earlier on Monday, an explosive-laden drone was shot down near Erbil International Airport, and two explosive-laden drones crashed at the Khurmala oil field in Erbil province. Despite the frequency of these attacks, no group has claimed responsibility for the attempted drone strikes.
