Oshikoto: Governor Sacky Kathindi has appealed for a national dialogue to confront gender-based violence (GBV).
According to Namibia Press Agency, the campaign is expected to educate, raise awareness, and foster behavioural change throughout Namibia, empowering communities and individuals to actively oppose GBV.
'We must broaden our lens,' he stated, calling for the creation of safe spaces where boys and men can speak out, be heard, and heal. He added that there is a need to teach young boys that true strength involves seeking help and treating others with dignity, rather than silently enduring hardship.
Acknowledging that abuse affects everyone, Kathindi urged all victims, regardless of gender, to seek support, reminding them that they are not alone. He called on citizens to revive the spirit of being each other's keepers, encouraging intervention when abuse is witnessed or help is needed.
Kathindi specifically urged concrete actions: 'Open discussions about GBV in homes, communities, and churches; educational empowerment for school children; unwavering support for all survivors; and accountability for abusers.'
Speaking at the same occasion, Omuthiya Mayor Beata Nashongo said there's escalating and deeply traumatic violence against women and children, which is a direct threat to Namibia's core values. Nashongo said that GBV undermines collective safety, societal values, and national identity, leaving many women and children feeling unsafe in their own environments. She called upon all Namibians to unite and declare 'enough is enough' to GBV.
