Windhoek: Katima Mulilo Mayor Kabende Kabende has urged Caprivi Senior Secondary School (CSSS) learners to refrain from vandalism and take their upcoming examinations seriously. Kabende, musician and music producer Mushe Musomi (popularly known as DJ Buyo), and social worker Hizen Simasiku were invited to address the learners on Friday.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Kabende, a former CSSS learner, shared his personal journey of starting school at age four, progressing through tertiary education, and ultimately becoming mayor. "I never failed a grade from Grade 1 to Grade 12. I never failed a year in university. Now, I'm here today, I navigated all that pressure," he said.

He urged the learners to balance their different priorities. "I balanced myself to be socially, religiously, and academically acceptable to my peers, so please find that balance. Don't dedicate too much of your time to the social side of things. Balance is part of growth; it's part of living," he said.

The mayor advised the learners to manage their time effectively as they approach their examinations. Kabende also strongly condemned vandalism. He pointed out that previous generations left the desks and chairs clean and urged current learners to uphold the same standard.

Simasiku, a social worker at Katima Mulilo District Hospital, focused his address on mental health and substance abuse, warning that mixing studies with alcohol or smoking is destructive. "Some of these decisions play a very big role in our future, that's why it's very important as a learner today to make wise decisions. Learn to say no and ensure that your future self will thank you for whatever decision you make today," Simasiku said.

Emphasising focus and self-control, Musomi added: "Talent without discipline is just a wish, it is nothing." CSSS principal Richard Musilizo meanwhile thanked the guest speakers for responding to the school's invitation. He expressed confidence that the session would boost academic performance.

Some learners interviewed by Nampa said they felt highly motivated by the presentation, with many expressing excitement over meeting the mayor and DJ Buyo in person.
