LPM vows to bring drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre to Keetmanshoop

The Landless People's Movement (LPM) candidate for the by-election for the Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency, Maxie Minnaar said they will work closely with the central government to ensure it establish a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre at within the constituency.

Minnaar who was speaking at the party's press conference here on Wednesday added that the rehabilitation centre will cater for the Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency and the whole ||Kharas Region.

'Drug and alcohol abuse remains a major social challenge that we face within our constituency and region, the rehabilitation centre is one of the small step we plan to take in order to restore the dignity of our youth and community,' said Minnaar.

Minnaar said that if LPM is voted into power they will re-imagine and re-organise Keetmanshoop into a clean and orderly town adding that all shebeens will operate in a specifically demarcated area.

'We cannot continue to allow a situation where shebeens continue to mushroom to the detriment of our society and school going children as LPM we say no shebeen must be in close proximity to schools, places of worship nor in residential area,' she added.

The candidate pointed out that more pay-points should be set in the constituency for elders when receiving their old age grants s as there is currently just one in town at Nampost a situation she said is unacceptable.

'In many cases the elderly have to sleep outside the Nampost building just to be first in line to receive their grants, this is totally unacceptable we will engage with all stakeholders to resolve this situation,' she stressed.

She went on to say that under LPM plans are there to further develop the Fonteintjie fish farm in Tseiblaagte to cater for large scale irrigation emphasising that hydrophobic irrigation scheme is one the initiative that can unleash the economic potential of the Fonteintjie fish farm .

'This can create a significant amount of jobs and provide food security for many vulnerable families in the informal settlement, we will work on various projects that can unleash the economic potential of the natural fountain,' she cited.

Minnaar vowed that under LPM people shall be govern and be in charge and the community shall witness socio-economic development, political renewel and the deepening of democracy.

The by-elections for the Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency Councillor elections to be held on 15 January 2020.
