Major cost drivers in the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture throughout the year have taken up funds meant for furniture at schools

Major cost drivers in the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture throughout the year have taken up funds meant for furniture at schools, Executive Director Sanet Steenkamp has said.

Responding to reports that Grade 10 learners in four classrooms at Nkurenkuru Combined School in the Kavango West Region are forced to sit on the floor because of a lack of desks and chairs, she said the ministry's main cost driver at the moment is catering in hostels.

'That is followed by the school feeding programme, then by utilities across all 14 regions of the country,' she said in response to questions by Nampa.

The ministry also has to pay water and electricity bills for the schools that are connected, while Steenkamp further said the education ministry also pays a subsidy to the communities in private hostels, subsidising them by N.dollars 22 per child.

With the economic downturn, it has become increasingly hard to cover many other items with the aim of just focusing on that which is of critical importance, she stressed.
