Windhoek: Players from marginalised communities will form part of the team representing Namibia at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games scheduled for Mozambique later this year. Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) Chief Administrator, Freddy Mwiya, announced this development during a press conference on the 2026 National Youth Games on Thursday, stating that the team was selected at a marginalised community games last year.According to Namibia Press Agency, the players will form part of those who will be chosen for Team Namibia. Mwiya expressed the desire to provide opportunities for children from marginalised communities to become integral members of Team Namibia. He highlighted that while these children often participate in community games, they rarely see significant changes in their sporting careers. The Ministry of Gender, Equality and Child Welfare organises marginalised community games like the Dr Libertine Amathila Sports Tournament and Otjozondjupa mass games. These events aim to integrate communities such as the San, Ovatue, Ovatjimba, and Ovazemba. Mwiya also mentioned that the 2026 National Youth Games in May will adopt a clustered format, grouping sport codes and regions into manageable competition centres. This approach involves grouping regions into several central locations for matches, as opposed to each region hosting separately. The decision aims to manage a reduced budget, which has cut funding for the National Youth Games and AUSC Region 5 participation from N.dollars 9 million to N.dollars 3 million. Mwiya noted that this strategy would help reduce travel and accommodation costs, as well as venue hire expenses, and urged support from various entities to back the athletes.
