Namibia’s sprinter at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Beatrice Masilingi, was on Wednesday eliminated from the competition after finishing last in heat three of the women’s 200 metres (m).

The 18th edition of the 2022 World Athletics Championships is currently underway at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States of America (USA).

Namibia’s Under-20 World Athletics Championships silver medallist in the 100m and 200m reached the semi-finals on Tuesday with a seasonal best of 22.27 seconds, but her semi-finals performance was not good enough to book her a spot in the finals that will be held Friday morning.

In the semi-finals, the Namibian started well from the blocks in a heat that saw the top three athletes record sprints under 22 seconds, but by the 90m mark she tumbled and then limped to the finish line in last position with the slowest time from all three heats of 24.78 seconds.

Tamara Clack of the USA won that heat with a time of 21.95 seconds, while Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain came second with a time of 21.96 seconds and 200m Olympic Games gold medallist Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica finished third, but qualified for the final with a time of 21.97 seconds.

Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson, who won a silver medal in the 100m sprint at the championships earlier this week, ran the fastest times in all three 200m heats. She won heat one with a time of 21.67 seconds while her teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won heat three with a time of 21.82 seconds, which was the second fastest time in the women’s 200m heats.

With Masilingi eliminated from the World Athletics Championships, Oregon2022, Namibia has no representative left at the event.

The finals of the women’s 200m will take place Friday morning.
