Windhoek:Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has expanded its 5G network to include Grootfontein, Mariental, Okahandja, Otjiwarongo, and Tsumeb, aiming to improve connectivity and meet the growing demand for network services.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the expansion is a part of the second phase of MTC's 5G deployment, which involves 19 new sites across nine regions. These sites include eight in the Erongo Region, four in Kavango West, and one each in //Kharas, Kavango East, Khomas, Kunene, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, and Otjozondjupa.

The rollout has also enhanced existing 5G coverage in Windhoek and Walvis Bay. Ludwig Heinrich Tjitandi, MTC's General Manager for Networks, stated that the company's network investments are focused on providing reliable connectivity and preparing for future demands.

MTC began its 5G journey with Namibia's first public trial in 2024, partnering with Huawei and achieving speeds of about 1.4 gigabits per second. This was followed by a commercial rollout in 2025, beginning with 40 sites across various locations, including Windhoek and Walvis Bay.

In addition to 5G, MTC upgraded 4G/LTE capacity at 20 sites in 2026 and replaced outdated equipment at 25 sites under its network modernization program. The company also received N$32.3 million from the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia's Universal Service Fund to deploy additional network solutions.

MTC is replacing eight existing towers, mainly in Erongo, and others in Khomas, Omusati, and Zambezi, to improve coverage and address infrastructure deterioration. These efforts are part of MTC's commitment to strengthening the network and supporting Namibia's digital transformation.
