Mobile Telecommunications Limited’s (MTC) on Tuesday announced that its 2017 investment of N.dollars 10.7 million into the Buy A Brick project has resulted in the construction of 271 low-cost houses countrywide through the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN)

MTC Chief Human Capital & Corporate Affairs Officer Tim Ekandjo in a media statement said the houses were awarded to recipients in the regions of Otjozondjupa with 62, followed by Ohangwena with 52, Oshana 41, Kavango West 33, Zambezi 30, Hardap 25, Erongo 20 and Omusati eight houses.

‘The houses were built in various towns throughout Namibia based on land availability in the hopes of transforming the lives of all Namibians in all aspects.

We are overjoyed to have finished this project and to have kept our promise from 2017. The project has been delayed significantly over the last two years due to Covid-19, but we are proud of the Shack Dwellers Federation and its leadership for their commitment to providing low-cost housing to so many Namibians. We will continue to support housing and other social challenges in Namibia as part of our commitment to our Environmentally Sustainable Goals, which include housing, ‘Ekandjo stated.

SDFN Facilitator Edith Mbanga on her part told Nampa that representation in all regions was important because the federation looked for applicants who were ready to build according to the guidelines and had a desire to own their own homes.

‘We have the responsibility as the federation to allocate the funds we receive from the private sector to people who are serious and willing to do the work. By this we mean following the guidelines, attending meetings, and being active in going out and learning what the processes are from other towns in order to have a better understanding of how the federation works,” she stated.

Mbanga stated that women are at the forefront of this project, which is evident by the fact that they received 75 per cent of the allocated houses.

‘Women are the organisation’s driving force. Our mission is to ensure that the majority of women participate in this project so that they can become homeowners. We value the collaboration between the federation, the private sector, and local governments because it provides an opportunity for community-driven development and income-generating projects,” she stated.
