Nicosia: Namibia has expressed concern over the Israeli Security Cabinet's recent approval of a plan to take control of Gaza City, warning that the move could worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. A statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation's Executive Director, Penda Naanda, said the decision 'stands to significantly worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis marked by hunger, deprivation, and risk of forced starvation.'

According to Namibia Press Agency, the ministry welcomed condemnation of the plan from members of the international community and reaffirmed Namibia's commitment to peaceful conflict resolution in line with constitutional principles and international law. Naanda stressed that Namibia's stance was rooted in its own liberation struggle and experience under illegal occupation and apartheid.

'Drawing on our own history of overcoming illegal occupation and apartheid, Namibia fully understands the cost of oppression and hopes and dreams of freedom. Our nation's experience fuels our empathy and solidarity with those enduring denial of self-determination,' Naanda said.

He called on all UN member states to uphold their international obligations and take decisive action to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, expressing support for any initiative aimed at protecting the rights and lives of both Palestinians and Israelis, while urging dialogue over military escalation.

The statement reiterated Namibia's backing of United Nations General Assembly and Security Council resolutions addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict, and emphasised the need for a peaceful, negotiated settlement.

Naanda said Namibia's position was one of 'unwavering and principled' commitment to justice, security, and dignity for all people affected by the conflict. He appealed to the global community to work together to restore hope and stability to the region.

'Namibia continues to urge all parties and the international community to assist them to work towards restoring hope, security, and justice for those striving to exercise their right to live in peace and dignity,' Naanda said.
