Luanda:The Namibian President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has called for the implementation of bilateral agreements with Angola, emphasizing the need to deliver tangible benefits to the citizens of both nations. Addressing the inaugural session of the Angola-Namibia Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Luanda, she highlighted the importance of translating historical ties into sustainable socio-economic benefits.

According to Namibia Press Agency, a legal audit in 2024 identified over 60 bilateral agreements between the two countries, covering areas such as trade, border management, infrastructure, water, energy, and transport. Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed that the significance of these agreements lies in their execution and the positive impact they can have on people's daily lives.

She urged ministers and government officials from both countries to ensure these commitments are met. The cooperation should aim at reducing poverty, addressing inequality, and creating employment opportunities. Nandi-Ndaitwah also called for the urgent completion of transboundary water projects, including the extension of the Cafu Canal infrastructure into Namibia and the commissioning of permanent pumping stations at Calueque.

The Namibian leader noted that this project could address water security challenges and support agricultural development in Namibia, known for being the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa. She also mentioned the proposed railway extension from Oshikango to Santa Clara in Angola, which could enhance connectivity and reduce transport costs.

Nandi-Ndaitwah pointed out that administrative delays and transport constraints increased business costs and limited opportunities for small-scale traders. She advocated for effective implementation of energy cooperation projects, such as the Angola-Namibia Interconnector Project, and stronger collaboration in the oil and natural gas sector.

The elevation of bilateral relations to a Bi-National Commission level was decided on July 14, 2019. Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed hope that the meeting would lead to practical recommendations to tackle challenges and further enhance relations between Namibia and Angola.
