Gobabis: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Omaheke Region have called on residents and visitors to act responsibly during the long weekend.
According to Namibia Press Agency, NamPol's spokesperson for the region, Chief Inspector Fina Sakajengenga, in an interview with Nampa, said people are travelling to spend time with their families. She urged road users and community members to prioritise safety at all times.
Gobabis is expected to host several major activities over the long weekend, including the Omemma Bonanza that will feature football, netball, and volleyball activities. Another event planned for the weekend is the Trans Kalahari Concert, where local choirs as well as choirs from Rundu, Otjiwarongo, and Oshakati are expected to perform.
Sakajengenga appealed to members of the public to celebrate peacefully and avoid any behaviour that might lead to violence or criminal activities. "We urge everyone to refrain from provoking others, engaging in fights, or carrying dangerous and illegal weapons such as pangas, knives, firearms, and other sharp objects. Let's work together to ensure a peaceful and safe environment during the long weekend," she said.
Furthermore, the spokesperson advised motorists to obey traffic regulations and cautioned them to avoid drinking and driving and speeding. She also urged drivers to exercise caution in residential areas where children might be playing outside.
"We don't take pleasure in arresting people. Our goal is to work with the community in preventing crime and ensuring everyone enjoys the festivities safely," Sakajengenga added. She thus encouraged members of the public to cooperate with police officers during stop-and-search operations, which are lawful measures aimed at detecting illegal items such as drugs, stolen properties, and unlicensed weapons.
"Let us cooperate to maintain law and order in our region during this long weekend," said Sakajengenga.
