The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) recently approved Internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) of tax collection through third-party agents.

The SOPS will regulate the actions taken by NamRA upon failure by taxpayers to pay their tax liabilities, as and when they become payable.

According to a media statement issued by NamRA here on Tuesday, the appointment of the third-party agents includes an employer where the taxpayer is employed to hold money on the behalf of defaulting taxpayers. The third-party agent is obliged by virtue of the appointment to pay the amount owed in tax over to NamRA.

Chief Strategic Communications and Support Engagements at NamRA, Yarukeekuro Steven Ndorokaze, noted that taxpayers are informed that any tax refund owed to them shall first be set off against outstanding debt on any account.

“We therefore urge all taxpayers to pay on time or make arrangements to settle their debt,” he noted.

The SOPS is expected to contribute to optimizing organisational efficiency, services delivery and cost effectiveness to enhance revenue collection and improve voluntary compliance, the statement added.

The SOPS became effective on 03 January 2023.
