The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) Abraham Nehemia said water will be rationed to the town of Rundu.

This comes after the frequent interruptions of water since last week at the town, where the Rundu Town Council currently owes NamWater N.dollars 124 million.

Residents of the town owe the council close to N.dollars 300 million in overdue municipal bills, which has negatively affected the implementation of some of its developmental services or projects.

‘As from 22 October to 27 October, water will be rationed to the town of Rundu to allow the council to mobilise sufficient funds to purchase enough water credits,’ Nehemia said in a letter addressed to the Rundu Town Council’s CEO, Olavi Nathanael on Friday.

Council was placed on prepaid credit system by the water utility after it was removed from the conventional water supply system after the town had accumulated debt of close to N.dollars 60 million in 2018.

Nehemia said the rationing will be done every morning between 05h00 up to 09h00 and in the evening from 17h00 up to 21h00.

Additional time, he said, will be made for the supply of water to the Rundu State Hospital as the situation may predict.

Nathanael said it commenced with operation revenue collection this week, aimed at rooting out illegal water connections and disconnecting water accounts in arrears.

He said at least 42 business premises in the town in huge arrears were disconnected, while seven were found with illegal connections.

The operation, he said, is expected to reverse the town’s water crisis.

‘Of the 15 000 water accounts on the town’s database, only 5000 are paid up accounts,’ he said.
