Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on Namibians to combine spiritual reflection with behavioural change and institutional accountability in addressing gender-based violence (GBV), violent crime, and fatal road crashes.According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah made the call during the National Prayer Day commemoration at the Independence Arena in Windhoek, held under the theme, 'Seeking Divine Intervention for Behavioural Change. God Knows. God Hears. God Sees.' She emphasized that while the nation seeks divine intervention, prayer should also inspire personal responsibility, stronger law enforcement, and collective action across society.She urged that the National Prayer Day be more than just a gathering, calling it a potential turning point for the nation. She implored citizens to consider changes in daily interactions, child-rearing practices, conflict resolution, institutional responses, and protective measures for one another. The initiative, established by Cabinet and coor dinated by the Office of the Vice President, aimed to unite citizens of various faiths in prayer over social challenges affecting the country.Prayers during the event focused on issues such as GBV and domestic violence, violent crime, road crashes and fatalities, suicide, and mental health challenges affecting communities. Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted the need for reflection on the adequacy of current efforts to combat GBV, questioning the effectiveness of existing measures given the persistent nature of the problem.The President acknowledged the existence of strong laws in Namibia intended to protect citizens but pointed out deficiencies in their implementation. She noted that the Minister of Home Affairs and the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Force are evaluating the operations of Gender-Based Violence Protection Units to identify areas needing improvement, including the timely serving of protection orders under the Combating of Domestic Violence Act.Nandi-Ndaitwah also mentioned that the Mini stry of Justice is reviewing the implementation and enforcement of legislation dealing with domestic violence and rape, with a specific focus on issues such as repeat offenders and delays in the justice system. Legal reforms will be proposed where necessary to address these challenges.Additionally, the Ministry of Works and Transport is assessing road safety legislation to introduce stricter penalties for offences and to enhance the protection of pedestrians and cyclists.
