Windhoek: The Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) on Friday handed over a petition to the Executive Director of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Mbumba Haitengela, as students across the country protested delays in non-tuition fee payments.According to Namibia Press Agency, Nanso secretary for tertiary education, Jerome !Nanuseb, delivered the petition at a protest event held at Government Office Park. He expressed the mounting frustration from students nationwide over the delay from the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) in disbursing the fees. It was highlighted that only about 4,000 out of an estimated 50,000 continuing students had received their payments by early June, despite assurances from NSFAF that disbursements would begin at the end of April.Iyaloo Nangula, a second-year student at the University of Namibia, shared her frustration, explaining that she had not received her non-tuition fees since 2025 despite repeatedly following up with the fund. Nangula, who commutes from Ongos Valley to UNAM daily, explained that the lack of funding has made it challenging to attend lectures, noting that she sometimes only goes when she has a test or assignment. She emphasized the difficulty of commuting without receiving her non-tuition fees and the repeated unfulfilled promises from NSFAF.Nanso UNAM branch vice chairperson, Abel Gertze, explained that the delays have had severe consequences for students. He noted that the delay of non-tuition fees has put students and trainees in significant inconvenience, to the point where some cannot attend classes due to a lack of transport money and accommodation. Earlier this week, student bodies engaged with NSFAF, which then committed to rolling out non-tuition allowances on a weekly basis rather than lump sums, aiming to clear outstanding payments for continuing students by mid-July.
