Windhoek: The Independence Memorial Museum remains one of Namibia's most important educational and historical institutions, preserving the country's history from a Namibian perspective. This is according to Boyson Ngondo, the Deputy Director of National Heritage and Culture Programmes in the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, who described the museum as a 'flagship monument'.According to Namibia Press Agency, Ngondo informed Nampa that the museum in Windhoek, inaugurated by former President Hifikepunye Pohamba in 2024, enables Namibians and international visitors to engage with the country's historical journey from the pre-colonial era to independence and modern nationhood. Ngondo expressed that the Independence Memorial Museum is a pivotal monument in understanding Namibian history.Ngondo explained that the museum was established to preserve and communicate Namibia's history while also creating a platform for reflection and learning. He emphasized the museum's role in pro viding opportunities for Namibians to engage and understand the historical landscape of the nation.He highlighted the museum's educational role, noting that schools regularly organize visits for learners to engage with exhibitions and tour guides stationed at the facility. The museum hosts educational programs where school groups visit to interact with guides who share and communicate historical narratives.Ngondo also underscored the museum's importance in conveying Namibia's history to international tourists, serving as a platform to communicate the country's historical experiences globally. The 40-metre-high Independence Memorial Museum, designed in the shape of a traditional potjie pot, contains galleries that focus on Namibia's anti-colonial resistance and national liberation struggle.A significant feature of the museum is a gallery dedicated to the genocide committed against the Ovaherero and Nama communities between 1904 and 1908. Ngondo acknowledged that the genocide gallery often evokes strong e motions among visitors, but emphasized the necessity of confronting this painful past. He urged Namibians to visit the gallery, especially as the country marks the second Genocide Remembrance Day on Thursday.
