Windhoek: The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Hockey Club men's team has been crowned University Sports South Africa (USSA) C Section Champions after an unbeaten run of five matches.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the competition commenced on 29 June and concluded on 04 July 2026. NUST began its victorious campaign with a 6-1 win over Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and wrapped up the tournament with a 3-1 triumph over Sol Plaatje University.

'The achievement reflects NUST's continued investment in student sport and hockey development and further positions the University among the leading hockey-playing institutions in the Southern African region,' the university stated on Monday. The team's remarkable performances were further acknowledged through individual accolades, with David Britz securing both the Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Tournament awards.

The victory has earned the team promotion to the B Section for the 2027 tournament. This marks the second instance of NUST winning the C Section of South Africa's premier university hockey competition to gain promotion to the B Section.

Team captain Matuu Kavikairiua expressed pride in the accomplishment and indicated the team's readiness to tackle the challenges presented by the B Section in 2027. 'This achievement reflects the hard work, discipline, and commitment that the players, coaches, and management have invested throughout the season. Securing promotion back to the B Section is a significant milestone, and we are grateful to NUST management, our sponsors, our families, and everyone who supported us on this journey,' Kavikairiua stated.

Meanwhile, the women's team finished seventh out of eight teams after losing their first four matches and clinching victory in their final game, the seventh/eighth-place play-off, against VUT. Team captain Kay Kamwi remarked that the tournament was a valuable learning experience despite the challenging results.
