Okakarara: Chief Executive Officer of the Okakarara Town Council, Ernst Katjiku, confirmed plans to relocate the central business district (CBD) of Okakarara this year to a newly serviced portion of land at the town. "This identified area is situated between Pamwe residential area and the veterinary office complex of our town," said Katjiku.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the land has been serviced, including the provision of electricity, clean drinking water, and a sewage drainage system already channeled at the site. Katjiku explained that the decision to relocate the CBD from the only tarred street of Chief John Tjikuua Road is due to the lack of space at the current area, vision, and the modernisation plans of the new Okakarara city.
The CEO stated that most streets at the new CBD will be wide and paved with interlocks. "The area is huge and Council wants it to connect Pamwe and the current Okakarara," he said. Manager for Local Economic Development at the town, Helga Humbu, mentioned that about 55 business and institutional plots have been identified at the new CBD site.
The area will accommodate most government offices and business complexes, including the new Okakarara Town Council building. "The plots are huge, measuring approximately 1,800 square meters and 7,000 for the malls, and will be sold at prices between N.dollars 240,000 and N.dollars 950,000," said Humbu.
Former management committee chairperson of Okakarara town, Golden Katjatako, in an interview with Nampa, said planning for this new Okakarara CBD started in 2018, and approximately N.dollars 5 million was allocated by the council for land servicing. "The idea is, have these plots sold at affordable prices and have investors left with good money for their construction activities. We want them to come and invest in Okakarara for our young people to secure jobs," said Katjatako.
Katjatako, who was also the deputy Okakarara mayor in 2024 to 2025, wants to see the new CBD functional by 2027. Okakarara was proclaimed a town in 1992.
