Oshikoto region: Oshikoto Region Governor, Sacky Kathindi, on Wednesday delivered a strong message of discipline and ambition as he officially sent off the region's Under-20 football and netball teams ahead of the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup in the ||Kharas Region.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Kathindi addressed the teams, emphasizing that their participation was more than just a sporting event; they were also representing the identity and aspirations of Oshikoto as ambassadors of the region. He urged the athletes to not only focus on competition but also to embody the strength, unity, and resilience of their people.
Kathindi highlighted the importance of balancing competitive spirit with discipline and sportsmanship, stating that while winning was important, the character and conduct of the teams would ultimately define their legacy. He urged the athletes to ensure that their behavior was as impactful as their talent.
In his address, Kathindi also reaffirmed the regional leadership's commitment to youth development. He announced that his office had procured full football and netball kits for the teams as a part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sport. This investment, he said, was a testament to their belief in the potential and future of the youth, emphasizing that youth development is a shared responsibility crucial for uplifting sport in the region.
Oshikoto Under-20 football head coach Nelson Geingob expressed confidence in the squad, noting that preparations and player selection began in 2025. He mentioned that this would be his third appearance at the tournament as head coach and that he had selected a team capable of competing at the highest level. Geingob expressed optimism that this year could be the year Oshikoto finally wins the cup, as every training session was aimed at achieving that goal.
The 24th edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place in Keetmanshoop from 03 to 06 April 2026.
