Opuwo: The Otjikaoko Traditional Authority has expressed its full support for the ongoing polio vaccination campaign in the Kunene Region, urging community members to collaborate closely with the government to ensure its success.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the campaign will be conducted in two rounds, with the first scheduled for 26 to 29 January and the second from 24 to 27 February 2026. Chief Kavari Muharukua of the Otjikaoko Traditional Authority, in an interview with Nampa on Friday, stated that the leadership is committed to spreading awareness about the campaign. He encouraged parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive the vaccination.

Chief Muharukua emphasized the importance of community cooperation, saying, "We are supporting this campaign, and we want to tell our community at large to work with the government so that this effort can be successful." He noted that the traditional authority was informed about the campaign through discussions with leadership at the Opuwo State Hospital, who sought their help in disseminating information to the community.

Muharukua also highlighted potential challenges that may impact the vaccination drive, particularly in remote areas. He pointed out that due to low rainfall in parts of the region, some families have been forced to move with their livestock in search of better grazing, complicating efforts for healthcare teams to locate children in need of vaccination. "Some communities move to other places because of the lack of rain and pasture. We urge residents to bring their children to areas where the Ministry of Health teams are carrying out the vaccinations," he said.
