Outjo: The Namibian Police in Outjo on Tuesday held a women's meeting to call on parents to combat crime in the community and highlight the destructive effects of domestic violence. The meeting, held at the Etoshapoort Community Hall, discussed various topics such as gender-based violence, crime, and domestic violence.

According to Namibia Press Agency, during the meeting, Sergeant Ndinelao Malyenge stated that crime and violence are rooted in a lack of discipline and parental guidance at home. "We are raising children who are not disciplined and later complain when they are involved in crime. Discipline must start at home," Malyenge said.

Women in the community were advised to take responsibility for protecting children by monitoring their behavior. The sergeant warned against allowing children, especially girls, to roam the streets late at night. "If you allow your child to be outside at odd hours, you are exposing them to danger. As parents, we are guides. We have to discipline our children for a better society," Malyenge emphasized.

She highlighted the importance of disciplining children at home while avoiding abuse and encouraged reporting undisciplined children to the police. The meeting also addressed the issue of domestic abuse becoming normalized, with many witnesses choosing not to report it. "People see violence and do nothing. Domestic violence is not normal and should never be treated as a private matter," she asserted.

NamPol plans to further address domestic violence and gender-based violence with a follow-up meeting with men in the Outjo community. These meetings are part of efforts by the police to strengthen family structures and create a safer community in Outjo.
