The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) on Saturday welcomed 300 new members to the party at Otjerunda village in the Opuwo Urban constituency of the Kunene region.

The new inductees into PDM were from the ruling Swapo party and the National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO).

The party also welcomed back its former member of the National Council under the former Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) Edward Uapundua Mumbuu from the Swapo party, who brought along more than 100 other supporters, according to the party president, McHenry Venaani.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony some 20 kilometres Northeast of Opuwo, Venaani said the event bares testimony that PDM is still going strong and that it is the only party that welcomes everyone with open arms, and without fear or favour regardless of race, tribe and religion.

He said PDM is moving towards a new political dimension that will address developmental politics, noting that the party shall endeavour wherever it can to uplift the social-economic conditions of the people.

‘We have demonstrated by donating clinics, food and mattresses to the various communities and schools of our country,’ he added.

Also speaking at the occasion, PDM’s treasurer-general, Nico Smit, said it was no surprise that such an enormous number joined the party, judging by how it has recently grown in popularity, adding that the people of Kaokoland have since the onset been the most loyal supporters of the party. ‘This party is enjoying a great audience from the people of Kaokoland and you people have been the backbone of this party,’ he said.
