Police appeal for patience in Shikongo investigation

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) has appealed for patience from the public while the culpable homicide case involving the Inspector General of the police force, Joseph Shikongo, is investigated.

Three people died in an accident involving Shikongo on the Ondangwa-Oshikango main road near Indangungu village in the Oshana Region at the end of December last year.

The inspector general was travelling in his private vehicle.

NamPol in a media statement on Tuesday indicated that some statements have already been obtained and the wrecked vehicles involved in the accident remain subjects of the investigation, until the investigation team is satisfied with the examination of the evidence.

The acting Police Inspector General Elias Mutota constituted an investigation team headed by Detective Commissioner Nikolaas Kupembona, the current Police Regional Commander of Erongo Region.

It noted that in the absence of Shikongo, the acting inspector general is equally competent to oversee that the mandate of investigating any offences, as per the Police Act 19 of 1990, Section 13 is executed.

NamPol, therefore, appealed to the public to remain patient, to be cautious not to be drawn into public prosecution, and to allow for an unhindered investigation, the statement read.
