Cordoba: Nine-man Independiente Rivadavia claimed their first Copa Argentina title by defeating Argentinos Juniors on penalties. Colombian forward Sebastian Villa converted the decisive spot kick to secure the historic victory for Rivadavia.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the match was a dramatic affair, with Rivadavia taking a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Alex Arce and Matias Fernandez. The team managed this despite being reduced to ten men following a 41st-minute red card for midfielder Franco Amarfil.
Argentinos Juniors fought back with Alan Lescano scoring, and Rivadavia faced further challenges as defender Alejo Osella was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The match was forced into penalties after Erik Godoy's impressive 98th-minute goal.
In the penalty shootout, Rivadavia's Luciano Gomez, Ivan Villalba, Kevin Retamar, Sheyko Studer, and Sebastian Villa all scored. Argentinos Juniors' Lescano, Hernan Lopez, and Lautaro Giaccone converted their penalties, but Tomas Molina's miss allowed Rivadavia to secure a 5-3 victory.
This victory marks Rivadavia's first major trophy in its 112-year history and guarantees the team a spot in the 2026 Copa Libertadores, marking their first appearance in an international tournament.
