Rundu to host Winter Deaf School Sports Tournament

Maria Mwengere Secondary School in the Kavango East Region will this year host the Winter Deaf school Sports Tournament over the weekend.

The tournament, held annually invites schools with hearing impaired learners from all over the country to compete for top honors in three-sport categories.

The schools will be competing in soccer, volleyball, and netball.

A member of the organizing committee and teacher at Maria Mwengere Secondary School, Erna Muronga told Nampa on Tuesday that the tournament will start on Thursday and end on Saturday.

She said the tournament is aimed at encouraging learners with hearing difficulties to take part in sports in which some of them will be selected to be part of the regional and national sports teams of people with disability.

Muronga said there will be a lot of activities to be held during the tournament, including a beauty pageant to crown Mr.Miss Winter Deaf School Sports Tournament that will take place at the school itself in which she called members of the public to come in their numbers to support the tournament as well as the beauty pageant.

People should come in numbers to support the learners and for them to be able to see how learners with hearing difficulties can play sports, Muronga said.

Maria Mwengere Secondary won the tournament last year which was held by Eluwa Special School in the Ohangwena Region.
