Seychelles: Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Chairperson, Lazarus Chakwera has called on the citizens and political leaders of Seychelles to ensure that the upcoming elections are peaceful, credible, and transparent as the nation prepares to head to the polls this week.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Chakwera, the outgoing President of Malawi, issued a statement on Wednesday emphasizing that Seychelles' citizens will vote for a president and National Assembly members from Thursday to Saturday. He confirmed that Seychelles has invited SADC to deploy its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to monitor the election process, adhering to the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections of 2021.
These guidelines aim to support regular, free, fair, transparent, credible, and peaceful democratic elections as vital indicators of a healthy democracy. Chakwera highlighted Seychelles' reputation for peace and stability, expressing a desire for this tradition to continue through the polling days and post-election period.
He praised Seychelles for its peaceful and stable nature and urged voters to participate actively in the elections, exercising their democratic rights to foster the nation's development and prosperity. Chakwera also called on political leaders and their supporters to maintain calm, respect the people's will, and resolve any disputes peacefully through established legal channels.
Chakwera, who has been the President of Malawi since June 2020, recently conceded defeat to former President Peter Mutharika in the presidential elections held on 16 September 2025. Mutharika, 85, regained the presidency with 57 percent of the vote, having previously led Malawi from 2014 to 2020, while Chakwera garnered 33 percent of the vote.
