Swapo Party Secretary-General (SG), Sophia Shaningwa, has heaped praise on her party for its growth in leading the country over the years.

Shaningwa was speaking at the inauguration of the Swapo Party Oshikango district office on Tuesday, which also coincided with the 62nd anniversary of the ruling party.

She said post-independence, Swapo transformed from a liberation movement into a ruling party running an inclusive government implementing socio-economic developmental programmes striving for prosperity for all.

‘Indeed, the Swapo Party-led government has over the years made notable progress to develop the country through policy initiatives and tangible developmental projects,’ she said.

She said the party’s political programmes such as the election manifesto and the National Development Plans are just some of the policy initiatives that culminated in the building of infrastructures such as roads, railways, rural water supply, schools, health facilities and social safety nets to mention a few.

The SG expressed gratitude to the founders of the party and paid tribute to the veterans, heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle, some of whom she said paid the price with their lives to free the country from colonial occupation.

On the party’s new office at Oshikango, Shanigwa said it will serve the membership in the region and districts, before stating that the leadership there mobilised funds for the office to be constructed.

She said the legacy of the party is a revolutionary story that must be protected at all times.

The 62nd-anniversary celebrations countrywide were held under the theme ‘ Re-imaging Decisive Unity and Maximum Clarity of purpose beyond COVID-19.’

Shaningwa said the pandemic has caused socio-economic devastation, and that there is thus a need to reactivate the country’s economy.
