Windhoek: The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) on Wednesday awarded a total of N.dollars 20,000 to three local social media users in recognition of their ethical use of digital platforms. The winners formed part of the ministry's 'ethical use of social media' challenge, which ran between December 1, 2025, and January 23, 2026.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus expressed the ministry's aim to motivate influencers to produce original content free from bullying and to contribute towards building a safer digital space for all. 'As a ministry, we recognise the influential power of creatives and digital influencers in shaping public opinion, particularly among young people. Hence, through this challenge, we sought to encourage social media influencers to produce original, creative, and impactful content that promotes online safety, responsible, and ethical use of social media to build a safer and inclusive digital environment for our citizens,' the minister stated.
The three winners, Ester Nghipandulwa, Amwiigidha Ndeshipanda, and Rauha Severeus, were awarded N.dollars 15,000, N.dollars 3,000, and N.dollars 2,000, respectively. The judging criteria focused on content consistency, clarity and relevance of messaging, and audience engagement, assessing the reach and impact of the content through verified engagement data such as likes, comments, shares, and favourites.
Minister Theofelus noted the dual nature of social media, highlighting its potential to strengthen democracy, promote accountability, foster learning, and encourage civic participation and dialogue when used responsibly. However, she warned of the risks associated with its unethical use, which can lead to the spread of misinformation, social harm, and division.
The minister emphasised the importance of collaboration with local content creators and influencers to educate citizens on ethical online conduct. 'It is critical that we partner with local creatives and social media influencers to act as ambassadors of the ethical use of social media campaign and educate our citizens on the importance of ethical online conduct and, of course, safety,' she added.
