Karibib: Director of Sport in the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Jo-Ann Manuel, has called on sports officers to enhance the promotion of sporting activities. This initiative aims to boost awareness and address unemployment issues by encouraging more individuals to participate in sports.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Manuel made this appeal during the launch of the 11th edition of the QKR Navachab Half Marathon. The championship, which began in 2014, is set to celebrate its 11th anniversary on 20 September in Karibib. The main sponsor, QKR Namibia Navachab Gold Mine, has committed N.dollars 350,000 to support the event.
Manuel emphasized the importance of professionalizing sports in the country, highlighting that attracting athletes who can benefit from the event's proceeds is crucial. "When we are talking about the professionalisation of sports, it's nothing but us participating in sports to make a living, and that is what we are advocating for people to make a living out of sport," she stated.
She also pointed out the high youth unemployment rate in Namibia and suggested that sports could serve as a tool to mitigate this issue. Manuel added, "Let us remember that Los Angeles 2028 is the target. If we can give athletes the opportunity now, we can make them aware of how sports can change their lives, and perhaps see more active participation."
With the prize money having been increased during the 10th edition of the half marathon, participants in the 11th edition will have the chance to win awards in both the 10-kilometre race and the main event, the half marathon. Interested individuals are encouraged to register early by contacting their regional sports officer for the necessary registration link.
