The ‘new Africa’ needs inclusive leaders: Geingob

Prime Minister Dr Hage Geingob said new Africa needs inclusive leaders who must understand that inclusivity spells unity, peace and development, while exclusivity spells conflicts and wars.

‘Wherever you leave out one side, one race one class, you are spelling and inviting wars and conflicts. The wars and conflicts we have been seeing all over are caused by that element of somebody feeling that they are not part of that system,’ Geingob said whilst lecturing at Harvard School of Public Health in New York on Friday.

The Namibian leader was invited to lecture at the University’s Centennial Dean’s Distinguish Lecture series.

Africa must now have processes, systems and institutions in place in order to be transparent and allowing opposition parties be part of the system and when the election results come out they are not going to question about the outcome.

‘In Namibia, we want to build our country which will be inclusive where all Namibians must feel not left out. No one, tribe, or religion must feel left out. That is why we say one Namibia one Nation,’ said Geingob.

The lecture was themed ‘National Leadership and Organisation verse Transactional leadership and Organisations.

Geingob hailed African great leaders such as founder and original freedom fighters Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Julius Nyerere of Tanzania among others, who fought for political independence of Africa and raising the flags and national athems.

He described them as transactional national leaders who brought about independence and freedom of Africa.

‘We now have to think of to have transformational leaders for Africa. Leaders to transform the country’s economy by empowering the people who were left out,’ he stated.

In Southern Africa region, Geingob said people fought settles colony, where white people came and settled in the region.

After independence of the region, Presidents such as Sam Nujoma, Robert Mugabe and Nelson Mandela as revolutionary leaders, accommodated the white settlers as they were also citizens of those nations.

‘When we achieved our independence, these leaders could have been transformational leaders to transform the system, but they turn out to be transactional leaders for the sake of maintaining peace and policy of national reconciliation,’ he said.

‘We need new leadership that is transformational to bring about a desired change, but the change that is not managed properly can also wipe out those who are trying to think about change,’ he said.

Africa needs transformational leaders to transform the continent’s economy by empowering the people who were left out.

‘In Namibia, we are managing the change, so far we have five elections, where somebody win and the one lost out accept the outcome,’ he said.

Geingob then indicated that Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was a transactional organisation which was aimed at liberating Africa, but the African Union (AU) is regarded as transformational because it has so far created 10 commissioners and the rule of 50/50 per cent of women and and men representation has been implemented.

The organisation has also created Panafrican Parliament where voices of all people are being heard.

Geingob then took the opportunity to call on the international press to look and report at new Africa and its new leaders.

He called on investors, journalists and professors to be also transformational.

‘Some of journalists are still reporting on old Africa, Africa of coup, without recognising that new Africa is on the march,’ he stressed.

‘Africa is moving and open to investors, what we cannot do is trade our freedom which we have fought for,’ he said.

The lecture was themed ‘National Leadership and Organisation verse Transactional leadership and Organisations.

Haward University has a population of 900 students, of which 40 percent are foreigners.

However there are no Namibians currently studying at that university.

The next presidential and national assembly elections are due in November this year.
