Windhoek-based Tom and Jerry amateur football club won the Katutura Sports Union (KASU) Valentine’s tournament held at Khomasdal Stadium on Sunday.

The tournament, also known as the Mbiripipo Mondi Ndjavera Valentine’s Cup, attracted 24 football teams and 13 netball teams.

In the first football semi-final, Tom and Jerry defeated Redfire from Otumbonde 2-0 while Windhoek-based Truck Team overcame Duko Warriors from Omatjete 2-0.

Tom and Jerry went on to defeat Truck Team 1-0 in the final courtesy of a Titake Tjindeere strike in the dying minutes of the match to win the tournament for the third consecutive time.

The champions took home N.dollars 10 000, a trophy plus 20 gold medals, while Truck Team walked away with N.dollars 5 000 and 20 silver medals as runners up.

Red Fire and Duko Warriors pocketed N.dollars 2 500 as semi-final losers.

In the curtain-raiser match before the finals, Epukiro Masters defeated the City of Windhoek by a 2-1 scoreline.

Former Black Africa defender Moses Katjiteo and Okahandja-based former Liverpool player Killian Kavari scored for Epukiro Masters while Hax Maharero was on the scoresheet for the City of Windhoek.

Ndjiha Katjivena from Truck Team scooped the player of the competition award whereas his teammate Jacky Nganjone was named as the defender of the tournament.

Rikambura Muundjua from Tom and Jerry took the midfielder of the tournament accolade and his coach Nguvii Veseevete received the coach of the competition award.

Tjindeere, Tom and Jerry captain, said his team worked hard to win the tournament and took every match as final.

“It was not easy but our commitment and the desire for the win was a key in our victory,” he said, adding that as there is no active football in the country, contests like the Valentine tourney helps players keep fit.

Additionally, Malema Malema and Jekini Hengari respectively received accolades for best referee and linesman of the competition.
