First Lady of the United States of America (US), Jill Biden told Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO), Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, that it is inspiring to see many women in the Namibian government.

Biden, who landed in Namibia on Wednesday for her three-day visit to the country, told Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House on Thursday that Namibia has already achieved gender equality within government by appointing more females and that the US is aiming towards doing the same.

“I love the fact that there are so many women in your government. We are still working towards that in the US,” said Biden.

She added that her husband, President of the United States, Joe Biden, already took a bold step towards gender equality within the government by appointing the first female vice president in US history.

The US First Lady added that both the US and Namibia should be an example for the rest of the world.

During the courtesy call to Nandi-Ndaitwah, the two discussed the program for Biden’s visit, which included discussions on food security, health, youth and job creation.

On her part, Nandi-Ndaitwah indicated that as important as it is for the First Lady’s adolescent program to focus on the health of women and young girls, she is happy to see the focus shifting to cover the boy child as well.

“I am happy to see that we are moving towards boys because if we isolate the boy child in their growth, we will not be able to reach the gender balance we are aiming for,” she said.
