Windhoek Gymnasium Win Momentum Series

Windhoek Gymnasium won the Momentum Schools Cricket Festival after recording a comfortable 38-run victory against Windhoek High School in the final on Friday.

Opener SJ Loftie Eaton led the way with a great century as he helped Windhoek Gymnasium reach 155 runs for one wicket off their 20 overs.

Loftie Eaton’s century came off 57 balls and included ten fours and four sixes, while he put on 148 runs for the opening wicket with Michau du Preez who scored 45 off 52 balls.

In their chase, WHS were immediately in trouble when opener Zane Green was out for a duck for only two balls off the bowling of Tiaan Snyman.

Tiaan Steenkamp and JJ Smit put on 48 runs for the second wicket before Steenkamp was bowled by Danie van Schoor for 27, but Handre Klazinga joined Smit in a 50-run partnership for the second wicket.

When Klazinga was out for 20 off the bowling of Charl Brits it signalled the end of WHS’ challenge as they lost three wickets in quick succession. Jandre Rich was run out for four with the total on 102, while JJ Smit was bowled by Ruben van den Bergh off the next ball.

Eben van Wyk (7) and Christiaan Schumacher (9) took WHS to 1175 after 20 overs, as Windhoek Gymnasium completed a comfortable victory.

At the prize giving ceremony, WHS captain JJ Smit won the award for the Player of the Tournament.

Smit took eight wickets, with a best performance of 639, while he scored a total of 256 runs at an average of 64,00 with a top score of 102.

Tiaan Steenkamp of WHS won the Batsman of the Tournament award after scoring 262 runs with a top score of 167, while Danie van Schoor of Windhoek Gymnasium won the Bowler of the Tournament award after taking 16 wickets.
