Windhoek: Minister of Agriculture, Inge Zaamwani, has called for continued reforms, stronger industry alignment and heightened vigilance against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) as the Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) sets its recovery path.According to Namibia Press Agency, addressing Meatco's annual general meeting on Friday, the minister described Meatco as a strategic partner in achieving the agri-food sector's target contribution of 6 percent to the Gross Domestic Product by 2030. She said the company must align its strategic plan with the goals of NDP6 while maintaining its status as a credible global exporter of premium beef.Government, she said, recognizes the tremendous progress made during the period under review, 2025, including improved governance, increased financial stability, and renewed operational discipline. These gains reflect stronger board oversight, dedicated management and employees, and resilient producers, the minister stated.Zaamwani emphasized that Meatco's increasing financia l stability is not merely a corporate turnaround but a matter of national interest. She highlighted that a financially stable Meatco restores farmer confidence, secures markets for livestock, supports rural economies, and strengthens Namibia's export reputation.However, she added that the turnaround journey is not yet complete and requires sustained growth, stronger producer alignment, deeper market diversification, and sharper cost discipline. 'Government will continue to provide policy, veterinary, and regulatory support to secure the recovery,' she said.Zaamwani also warned that vigilance against FMD remains critical, describing it as a threat not only to animal health but also to trade, jobs, rural incomes, and access to international markets. She said the ministry, through the Directorate of Veterinary Services, has intensified border surveillance, strengthened monitoring and inspections, maintained vaccination schedules in high-risk zones, and enforced livestock movement controls.The minister reaf firmed the government's commitment to expanding market access, strengthening veterinary infrastructure, and promoting inclusive participation across the Veterinary Cordon Fence. On Monday, Meatco announced a profit of approximately N.dollars 106 million for the year ended 31 January 2025, after several years of losses.
