Oshana: Africa Day presents an opportunity for Africans to recommit their endeavours towards attaining aspirations of socio-economic development among a list of things, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has said.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks during the commemoration of Africa Day and simultaneously, a fundraising event for Omakolombongo Synagogue of Onamutai St Cuthbert Church in the Okaku Constituency of the Oshana Region on Sunday.

The day 25 May allows Africans across Africa and beyond to commemorate the liberation of their continent. On 25 May 1963, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was established, later changed to the African Union (AU).

The celebrations themed 'Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,' saw church leaders, businesspeople and traditional leaders among those present at the event.

"Today is not only about justice for Africans and reparations. 25 May also serves as a day for us, as Africans, to reflect on our priorities and, most importantly, to rededicate our efforts towards achieving Africa's ambitions for socio-economic advancement," Nandi-Ndaitwah stated.

The Head of State urged the attendees to celebrate the day wholeheartedly as the majority of African nations are liberated from foreign rule.

"We should feel a sense of pride, joy, and satisfaction in celebrating this momentous day, as most parts of the continent are independent and free from foreign colonial rule. It is therefore important that as we are gathered here today, we can join other African people to commemorate and celebrate the 62nd anniversary of Africa Day," she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah also called on Africans to honour the legacy of the Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation Sam Nujoma, and that of other African liberation icons like him.

"Now that he has [died] (on 08 February 2025), it is our duty to honour and preserve his legacy and that of our forefathers across the continent, recognising the sacrifices they made to achieve and preserve our freedom," she said.
