Windhoek: The Association of Dependents of Veterans Namibia (AODVN) has firmly rejected a proposed collaboration with the Namibia Exile Kids Association (NEKA), citing concerns that such a partnership would jeopardize their mission and professionalism.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the rejection follows a call from the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs for both associations to sign a Memorandum of Understanding intended to improve relations and foster cooperation. This call came after AODVN submitted a petition to Parliament last year, seeking an amendment to the Veterans Act 2 of 2008. The proposed amendment, which was in favor of AODVN, requested a revision of the definition of a child of a veteran and aimed at securing inclusion in government veterans' benefit provisions.

AODVN members expressed that the proposed partnership with NEKA does not align with their objectives, calling it unprofessional and unfair. In an interview with Nampa, AODVN Secretary General and spokesperson Petrus Nendongo criticized the process, highlighting that the association was not involved in drafting the Memorandum of Understanding and was merely invited to sign it. He questioned the fairness of being asked to sign a document they had no part in creating.

Nendongo also pointed out that the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs had ignored several requests from AODVN to discuss the amendment and related benefits, while NEKA was given priority for meetings.

Executive Director in the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Annely Haiphene, stated that the ministry is awaiting legal guidance on the issue. She explained that the Veterans Act, 2008, which addresses veterans' welfare, requires legal processes for any amendments. The ministry has sought advice from the Office of the Attorney-General based on the Parliamentary Standing Committee's recommendations and is awaiting feedback before further action.

Efforts to reach NEKA for comment were unsuccessful.
