COVID -19: Namibia records 160 new cases and five deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, on Monday announced that Namibia on Sunday recorded 160 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) positive cases and five deaths.

Shangula said the new deaths were reported from the Windhoek, Gobabis and Lüderitz districts, bringing the country’s death toll to 3 196.

The new positive cases have a gender distribution of 94 females and 66 males, ranging from a four-year-old to a 111-year-old.

Erongo recorded the highest number of infections at 42, followed by Otjozondjupa with 28 and Khomas with 24 cases.

Oshikoto recorded 21 cases, Oshana nine, ||Kharas seven, Kunene seven, Omusati, Zambezi, Omaheke and Hardap each recorded four cases, Kavango East three, Kavango West two, while Ohangwena recorded one case.

Among the confirmed cases are 28 learners, five teachers, three students and four healthcare workers.

The minister also reported 247 new recoveries, bringing the total number of active cases to 18 558, of which 368 people are hospitalised, while 76 are in intensive care units.

As of Sunday, a total of 175 077 people had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 53 471 had received two doses

“The AstraZeneca vaccines arrived on Sunday (08 August 2021). Vaccination with Astrazeneca will resume on Tuesday country-wide. We will be prioritising those receiving the second dose, but nobody should be turned away for the first dose. We expect more doses of AstraZeneca,” Shangula added.
