Tsumeb: The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples will be celebrated in Tsumeb for the first time on 09 August. The event, which will be held under the theme 'Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures', will feature the attendance of Vice President Lucia Witbooi and over 168 participants from 10 regions at the Oscar Norich Stadium.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the celebration aims to unite marginalised groups such as the San, Ovatwa, Ovatjimba, Nama, Ovahimba, and Ovazemba. Development Planner Phoibe Eelu from the Marginalised Communities Division in the Office of the President highlighted that the event will include showcasing cultural items, performing cultural dances, and selling traditional items.

Eelu noted the sensitivities around the term 'indigenous', as some groups associate it with being less privileged. The celebration seeks to foster pride and ownership among these communities. Additionally, Eelu mentioned efforts to support indigenous education, including transporting over 2,900 boarding learners to prevent school dropouts.

She also highlighted the partnership with Palms for Life, which has established 10 early childhood development centres in marginalised communities. These centres cater to children under six, providing healthy meals, handwashing facilities, and digital items.
