ECN registers criminal investigations over missing laptops

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ENC) has registered a case with the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), following the discovery of an unknown number of laptops missing at its head office in the Khomas Region.

A media statement issued on Wednesday afternoon by ECN said as part of executing its tasks, the ECN leverages on the use of IT in nearly all aspects of electoral operations, therefore the missing assets are subject to criminal investigation with NamPol.

ECN said it has in the meantime launched an internal investigation and responsible persons will be held accountable.

“ECN would like to assure the public that no data security breaches were committed as a result of this incident. The ECN understands the sensitivity and urgency of this unfortunate event and will keep electoral stakeholders and the public informed on any further developments concerning this matter,” reads the statement.
