Windhoek: Female cyclists will earn International Cycling Union (UCI) ranking points for the first time in the upcoming Tour de Windhoek, as announced by Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF) President Tauko Shilongo. This development marks a significant milestone for Namibia's premier international cycling event, which challenges the country's top riders against competitors from neighboring nations in a four-day race around the Namibian capital.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Shilongo emphasized that the inclusion of UCI points for female riders is a first for Namibia, showcasing the federation's dedication to promoting female participation in cycling. The event is expected to attract international teams from countries including Italy, Rwanda, and Cameroon, potentially inspiring more local female cyclists to join the sport.
Shilongo reported that preparations for the tour are nearly complete, with about 98 percent of the work finalized. He expressed pride in the efforts of his team and the support from sponsors, notably Standard Bank, along with backing from the government and individual contributors. The event will also be observed by the president of the Confederation of African Cycling, marking the first visit by a president of the confederation to Namibia.
The NCF president noted a record number of over 120 elite entries and several male teams for this year's event, surpassing last year's participation. Teams from countries such as Rwanda, South Africa, Mauritius, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe have confirmed their attendance, with close to nine teams participating.
The Tour de Windhoek will take place from July 31 to August 3, 2025. It will commence with a seven-kilometer hill climb at Harmony Hill, followed by various stages including road races and a criterium in central Windhoek. The event will conclude with a road race to Matchless Mine, covering distances of up to 120 kilometers for men and 83 kilometers for women.
